About Kumbhak

Kumbhak is commonly referred to retention of breath in Pranayama and Yoga. This can be retention before or after Inhale and exhale respectively or as guided by the practice. Now this application of breath-hold is designed for spiritual practices like Pranayama and Yoga.

However, Kumbhak is the effort making or strength creating ability of the human system. This everyone does on a daily basis for performing any dynamic activity. For example, while lifting something heavy or getting up from a chair or while focusing, a person’s breath gets held. Without this hold of breath, the activity will not happen. In all these cases the direction of breath hold is directed towards an external action. The same can be directed internally. All internal organs also need a factor of hold or stability to perform efficiently. This factor of hold needed for dynamic action is called kumbhak.

What is Kumbhak Therapy

Kumbhak Therapy is designed to heal chronic ailments like diabetes, hypertension, thyroid, cancer, asthma etc. in the human system. It involves specialized holding techniques (using Breath-hold, focus, sound, intention) directed towards a strengthening a specific function or organ in the human system. Kumbhak Therapy is based on two pillars – Prana Shakti Diagnosis and Customization. Prana Shakti Diagnosis helps in determining the root cause or the weakest factor causing problems. Customization means giving specifically designed Kumbhak Practices based on the condition and nature of an individual system. This is what separates Kumbhak Therapy from any other therapy.

About Kumbhak Therapy

How Does Kumbhak Therapy Work

Every dynamic activity needs the support or base of a
stable factor. Like we need a balanced centre of mass and
a ground in order to walk. Similarly, all internal organs
perform their dynamic functions based on a support of a
stable factor. When the organs or the stable factor
becomes weak, a disease happens inside. The solution
therefore lies in strengthening the organ or the factor
supporting the organ.

Kumbhak Therapy involves holding methods that are
directed towards strengthening the weakened organs or
functions. By strengthening the weakest aspect, other
aspects are strengthened too. This helps the body to repair
itself and come out of the chronic condition troubling it.

FAQs on Kumbhak Therapy

Most frequent questions and answers

The origins of Kumbhak breathing can be attributed to Yoga Paddhati. Here breath hold is used to create a specific quality of prana also known as pranayama. However, the same pranayama or quality can also be achieved by other aspects like Yama, Niyama, Asana, etc. also.

It is imperative to note that that the path of yoga is directs one towards samadhi or mukti (realization). Which in other words mean freeing oneself from the worldly life.

No. Breath-hold is one of the ways to enhance the Kumbhak or holding factor. The other ways in Kumbhak Therapy involves using breath, body movements, focus, mind, intentions, the energy system, external forces, the environmental factors and even divine influences in a person’s life.

To list all forms of Kumbhak practices would be a herculean task, as there can be millions of Kumbhak’s.
Breath happens because of one kumbhak, the heart functions due to another kumbhak. Similarly control over limbs or the memory function can be attributed to different Kumbhak’s. Clearly the possibilities are immense.

At a very basic level, kumbhak can be put into two categories.

The first is the holding factor because of which the dynamic aspects of life get created. This is known as Sahita Kumbhak.

The second one is absolute and it is the canvas of the dual world. This is called Stambha kumbhak or Kevala kumbhak.

If we go further, we need to see things from the perspective of creation. The creation of life is attributed to 7 fundamental base points and qualities. These are referred to as 7 chakras or Saptarishis, respectively. Of these, 6 have a physical presence and the 7th involves going beyond the 6.

Now keeping the chakras in perspective, there can be 4 Kumbhak’s for muladhara, 8 for swadhisthana, 10 from manipurka, 12 for anahata, 16 for vishuddhi, 2 for agnya. If we add these, we get a figure of 52. From here there are 5 more doorways or kumbhaka which takes the tally to 57. Considering that this is a dual zone with its dual aspect, the figure becomes 114. Of these, 6 happen as a result of flowering of the other 108. So, if look at the possibilities, there are 108 of which and 84 Kumbhak’s are applicable for this existence/universe.

These fundamental kumbhak can be branched to millions.

Let’s take breath hold as one category. This can be further divided into 7 categories. Recita, Purita, Uttara, Adhara, Aama, Pratyahara, and Santa. Breath hold can be done different ways. For example, one can inhale and hold (Purak) or exhale and hold (Rechak). When the air enters the Sushumna it is called Antar Purak and when it is released through the opening of Sushumna then it is Antar Rechak. Similarly, there can be more like Bhayabhyantara purak, etc.

We have already established that Kumbhak is the fundamental effort making ability which is used in every activity of life including the activity of yoga and pranayama.

This effort is needed whether one wants a better hold over life functions or whether one wants to become free from attachments of life.

If we see any Yogic text or books, we will find that Yoga, yogic practices and pranayama are directed towards spiritual growth and lead to mukti, moksha, enlightenment, self-realization, nirvana, kaivalya. All of these involve freeing oneself from the circle of life and death.

With Kumbhak Therapy, we focus on building the strength of organs and functions. We do not focus on attaining salvation or mukti.

Additionally, unlike in yoga, Kumbhak Therapy involves Prana Shakti Diagnosis for root cause determination and customization of the kumbhak therapy practices taught as per an individual system. Kumbhak Therapy practices are not one practice being taught to everyone.

Most therapies talk of managing or controlling the levels or symptoms. Kumbhak Therapy focuses on retuning the system back to its natural condition and not just focus on bringing down levels or lab parameters.

  • Kumbhak Therapy uses the body’s strength building or effort making mechanism.
  • It is targeted at a weakened organ or weakened function.
  • It’s completely natural.
  • It does not interfere or intervene in a person’s current medical treatment
  • It has no side-effects
  • It focuses on root cause determination and provides customized solutions.
  • It can be learnt from the comfort of one’s home.

Everyone practices or uses kumbhak. Without kumbhak nobody will be able to perform any activity – be it physical, mental, emotional. Everybody is unknowingly doing kumbhak.

However, right now in our courses, we do not encourage children in their growing age to do certain types of kumbhak. For therapy purposes we do not take children below 16 years.

This is like asking, what are the side effects of breathing or walking or doing any activity using the body. There are no side effects of kumbhak because it is the strength creating or effort making mechanism of the body. The body uses it to function better, both internally and externally. Plus, there are no side effects of kumbhak as it is not something external like chemical medicine or food.

Also, if you notice one cannot hold even a simple thing like breath-hold beyond a certain limit. Remember, no one on the planet ever died by holding their breath. They had to resort to other methods.

So, one cannot create difficulty with kumbhak, unless one goes beyond a threshold which the body allows. In Kumbhak Therapy practices, everyone is told to do the practices gently in a comfortable manner. The Kumbhak capacity is built slowly over a period of time.

It is clear that Kumbhak or the holding factor makes all function possible in our system. A Disease fundamentally means that some distortion has happened in a particular function or more than one function. A Disease means that a body has lost the strength of some organ or function. It also means that strength, balance or rhythm of some function and or an organ has been compromised. All these are regulated through Kumbhak only or in other words weakening of the holding factor i.e. Kumbhak causes disease. So, in practical terms, all chronic ailments can be addressed with Kumbhak Therapy.

A person in asthma, BP, or heart condition means they have lost the hold over their lung or heart function. By not doing anything about these, a person will forever suffer the condition and be on medicine for life. Therefore, a person with these conditions must do kumbhak practices as prescribed in the Kumbhak Therapy. By slowly building their hold or Kumbhak over weakened functioning, they can come out of the problem and will not need any medicine.

The time duration varies from therapy to therapy. Some require a time of 30-40 minutes, every day. Some require a time of 20 minutes in the morning and about 10 minutes in the evening.

Technically, one needs to do Kumbhak Therapy Practices till the time one is out of the condition. This can vary from a few weeks to a year or more. However, it is recommended to do the practices throughout life as with Kumbhak Practices one keeps on the building the resilience of the system against unfavorable internal and external factors.

Kumbhak Therapy courses provided by Astika Kumbhak involve minimum body movement. They can be done sitting on a chair or on a flat surface. Participants are also encouraged to do their practices gently while giving sufficient rest between rounds. Thus, they build their capacity slowly. Anyone above the age of 16, who is willing to commit themselves to their recovery with patience and dedication can do Kumbhak Therapy practices.

Kumbhak Therapy is not like chemical medicine. It is not based on bringing down levels or markers quickly…that can be disastrous for people in a certain state.

The therapy is based on building the system’s resilience and healing capacity. This varies from system to system. Everyone human system is unique and the degree of weakness caused by disease and chemical medicine varies from person to person.
While some people will start getting desired results in a few weeks, certain systems can take months or even a year to retune themselves back to a healthy state.
However, there is some very good news. More than 85% participants in any course start feeling a difference in their energy levels, calmness of mind, improved digestion and sleep in a week or two. Now these are vital parameters of health that cannot be ignored.

So Kumbhak Therapy is not magic, but the journey out of a chronic ailment can be magical.

There are two ways to decide this. You have to see which condition happened first or which condition is more aggravated currently.

For example, if a person has diabetes and BP, then one has to see which happened first – diabetes or BP. Now a person can have both conditions and is not sure which started first. In that case, look at which condition is causing more problems and opt for the course accordingly.

If diabetes is causing more problems, then join the Diabetes Reversal Kumbhak Therapy Course and BP too will be addressed in this.

If BP or Heart Issues are aggravated then join the BP & Heart Care with Kumbhak Therapy course and diabetes will be addressed too in the same course.
